The Hummingbird Project is a community powered clothing, baby and hygiene bank and community support hub
Our Pioneering 'Freetail' shopping experience is one of a kind; a retail store providing preloved and new items of adult, baby and children's clothing, as well as home furnishings, toiletries, period products, work wear, school uniform and baby items such as prams and cots
but everything is free to those who need it!
We want to remove the stigma attached to clothing banks and see 'Community Powered Clothing Hubs' as a great way to be frugal, fashionable and fight for our Planet, all at the same time!
Since our inception we have re-gifted over HALF A MILLION items, donated by the Community, back into the Community
Our Motto is - 'Give what you can, take what you need'
We are based in Glossop, Derbyshire but serve the wider community of Derbyshire, High Peak, Tameside and Greater Manchester
Everyone is welcome at our clothing hub!
We help:
Those who cannot afford to buy clothing or toiletries
Those fleeing a bad situation and in need of emergency items
Those whose funds aren't stretching as far as they used to
Salaried households who need an extra bit of help
Those who are passionate about sustainability and recycling
Those who prefer to buy local and pre loved to help the environment
Those who are passionate about fashion

The 1st Hummingbirds Hub was set up by Jo Gregory in her cellar in response to the Covid crisis. She collected, sorted and regifted clothing packs and baby essentials for people from the local and wider community. Over the next 2 years Jo and her small team distributed over 150 clothing packs and over 50 items of baby equipment per month. They also began additional campaigns such as collecting and gifting over 4000 easter eggs, over 6000 Christmas gifts for children and elderley, over 100 laptops and 100 mobile phones for local schools during lockdown.
The project was quickly gathering pace and Jo had always known that she wanted to build an open and safe space where people could come and 'Give what they can and take what they need'.. free from the stigma that was attached to traditional clothing banks. She wanted to create space where people from all backgrounds and circumstances could give, trade and take items - completely powered by people.... and that was when The Hummingbird Project was born!
We started to look for premises we received National Lottery funding to rent our little "HQ" back in March of 2022.
We then moved again to a 1600sq ft unit in April 2023 where our Community can now come and shop in style and comfort!
Since our inception in 2020 we have helped thousands of individuals and families - we have re-gifted and recycled AROUND 500,000 ITEMS and saved approximately £2.1 million from potential landfill
The Hummingbird Project exists for the community by the community - we run on a 100% volunteer basis and we wouldn't be here without you all!
We rely on donations from our Community, which can be dropped at our community hub in Glossop during opening hours (please check our current donations acceptance list on Facebook or with Jo Gregory before donating)

Volunteering!
All of our Hummingbirds gives their time for free. We open as much as we can manage whilst juggling work, businesses, kids and all our other life admin!
We have 5 Team Leaders and around 20 volunteers, as well as drivers, admin volunteers and other helpers, all equating to over 6500 hours of volunteering per year!
We will get bigger and be open for longer and offer more and more items as we grow!
We are always looking for volunteers to help us make our vision a reality. We'll help you find a way to volunteer that best suits you. We also rely on your generosity to help us deliver our services to our community, along with donations, fundraising and becoming a "patron".
